Take a
breath. Hold it. Let it out. Repeat. You stood on the board, toes curled over
the edge. You could hear the low mumble of voices below, some grouching because
you were taking so long on the board, but you didn’t care. This board was yours
for the next hour.
You
pictured yourself jumping from the board, body relaxed but poised and yet stiff.
Spin, half turn, toes pointed on the downward angle. Arms out, and then bring
back together just as you reached the water. No splash.
You
opened your eyes, no one was in the water below you, good. You leaned forward,
getting into position, and jumped.
*
You
stood against that gate with your arms folded and waited. Sure enough, Rin
exited the school and headed straight for you.
“Woah,
what happened? Everything ok Tink?” He asked.
You
began walking with him, “I splashed today.”
To
everyone else this would mean nothing, but Rin knew this meant everything to
you. You were a diver, a self-taught diver whose talent had allowed you to
transfer to the prestigious Samezuka Academy. You didn’t splash. Ever.
He
wrapped an arm around your shoulders, “Haru said we should drop by their pool
today for a swim, you up for it?”
You
nodded, you knew Rin wanted to go and you wouldn’t hold him back. Honestly you
just wanted to curl up in a ball. Since coming here your diving had taken a
drastic turn for the worse. You had been dropping points, a fraction of a turn
too slow, a jump not high enough, but you had never splashed the way you did
today. It was embarrassing. You were trying to prove yourself to the people in
the academy and you were failing.
“You
came!” Nagisa exclaimed running up to hug you. After meeting them in the park
where you first reunited with Rin, they had taken a great shine to you. You
gave him a small smile and hugged him back. He ran back and dove in the pool,
your heart clenching when his splash landed on the deck in front of you. Rin
slid his hand along your shoulders and down your arm to grasp your hand and
pulled you along with him to talk to Makoto. You smiled when you were supposed
to, and answered questions politely, but everyone could tell that something was
bothering you. You supposed it was Rin’s glares that stopped them asking
questions and you were grateful.
You
went and sat next to Go, you had become closer with her as you spent time with
her and her brother. The two of you chatted away as the boys swam, and soon it
was getting dark and everyone agreed it was time to call it a day.
You
waved goodbye as the others walked to catch the train and then turned to Rin to
head back to the academy. What you weren’t expecting was the grin on his face.
That grin snapped you out of your mood and set you on edge, anything could
happen with that grin. He took a step toward you, and then another. He cupped
your face in his large hands and you could feel yourself relaxing. One hand
snaked around to the small of your back and you could feel the heat radiate
through you and your muscles unwinding. You let out a breath and looked up at
him, the one man who’s very touch reached your soul.
But
that grin was still there, you weren’t safe yet. He slowly unzipped your
academy jacket and slipped it from your shoulders until it landed on the pool
deck. His red eyes never left yours, until you closed yours as you lips met. The
hand on your back unzipped the dress you were wearing, and slowly he let that
drop to the floor as well, leaving you in your bra and panties. You stood on
tiptoes and wrapped your arms around his neck. His hands trailed to your thighs
and wrapped them around his waist. You didn’t realise what he was up to until
he broke away and whispered, “Hold your breath,” and launched the two of you
into the deep end of the pool.
You
broke the surface spluttering, and whirled around to find him. He wasn’t above
the surface and you felt a hand slowly wrap around your ankle. You looked down
and saw the redhead wave at you, and then yank you down under the water with
him. Bubbles left your mouth as you yelped, but then his mouth was on yours and
you didn’t care anymore. Your fingers tangled in his hair as you gave him
control. You felt him propel you towards the surface where he pinned you to the
pool edge and continued his work.
“Let go
Tink.” He whispered as he kissed your neck. You rolled your head back and moved
your hands from his hair to the cement to hold yourself up. He let go of the
edge and held onto you instead, adding enough weight so you knew if you moved
your hands the both of you would sink.
He
moved along your wet skin, suckling here and there. He reached your sweet spot
and you let out a low groan, “Oh god, Rin,” He gave you a nip as a reward for
good behaviour, and then kissed your lips quickly before diving into the water.
You
looked around, cold without him. Your skin prickled, it was too dark to see him
under the water, and there were no ripples giving him away. You squealed as you
felt his hands, cold from the water, wrap around your waist. Lips pressed
themselves to your bare abdomen, and you let out another groan. You knew Rin
could feel the vibrations of it deep in your diaphragm, and he gave you another
nip.
He
began rising, he peppered your ribs with flicks of his tongue, and then between
your breasts, and then he was back attacking your lips. His hands braced
themselves back on the side of the pool, and you felt safe in the cage they
created. Rin broke away, but kept his lips a breath away from yours. He kissed
you once, “ready to go?” Kissed you again. You nodded, and he grinned, kissing
you one last time before hauling himself out and offering you a hand.
*
You had
slept in your own bed that night. As much as Rin argued that Nitori wouldn’t
mind, you didn’t want any rumours to start. You had enough problems already. You
met Rin for breakfast, and then head to the gym. You needed to get diving off
your mind, and since Rin was busy swimming, the gym was the next best thing.
You
skipped dinner, and waited until everyone had gone until you went to the pool
room. You stripped your clothes and changed into your swimsuit, then heading to
the end of the room and setting up a camcorder. You angled it so it would video
your whole dive, from the walk to the jump to entering the water. You
approached the boards. You put one hand on the cool metal of the ladder and
then began to climb. With a determined look you glared at the water, I will beat you.
You
took three slow steps then jumped, jumped again, and dove.
It was
probably an hour later that Rin came to find you. “I thought you’d be here.”
“Well
you found me.” You said, climbing the ladder. He didn’t move from his spot on
the door as he watched you dive three times, and on the fourth he followed you
up the ladder.
His
hands gripped your shoulders and began to work his fingers against them.
“Not
now Rin, I’m busy.”
“You
need to relax these shoulders, you’re too tense.”
You
smiled, remembering that you once gave him the same advice.
He let
go, and without looking back you jumped.
In the
water you felt alive, it surrounded you and caressed you. You loved swimming,
it was the reason you began diving, but every time you looked at the videos you
would see the splash and your heart would sink.
*
You uploaded the videos onto your
laptop and sat at your desk. Everyone else had gone to class so you had the
room to yourself, and you were dedicating it to figure out what was causing the
problems once and for all.
The earlier videos were you doing
a routine, flips, twirls. Later you dropped those and just dove. There was
still a splash.
“Ugh!” You pushed yourself away
from the desk, the wheely chair spinning. You’re
too tense, Rin’s voice rang in your mind. You caught yourself and looked at
the screen. The video was paused in the middle of a dive, and your left leg was
bent. You looked at the rest of the videos, an arm here, a foot out of place.
You were tense! It was known that divers had to stiffen every muscle when they
dove, but this was too much. It was just a mistake in form, you could correct
that!
You changed into your suit and
ran down the hallway, ignoring the looks and pulling your hair in a ponytail as
you went.
You looked at the ladder, and
rung by rung you climbed to the top. You hadn’t dove off this board before, you
hadn’t had one this high at home, and since Rin had stopped you jumping off
cliffs…. You stood at the edge, feeling the springboard bend under your toes.
You looked down at the water, I will not
beat you, I will join you. You
stepped back, and took a breath, took three steps, jumped on the springboard,
jumped higher and then let yourself go.
Your arms were wide, you brought
them together in front of your face right before you hit the water, a perfect
swan dive.
You surfaced and heard cheers
from the side. Wildly you looked over and saw students and professors both,
cheering for you. You saw a splash in the water and then Rin surfaced in front
of you, “That was beautiful.” He whispered, pressing his forehead to yours,
clasping your hands in his. The two of you swam to the side and climbed out,
then Rin was pushed aside as you were surrounded by people.
“That was amazing!”
“I’ve never seen such little
splash!”
“You have to teach me that!”
“Want to join the varsity dive
team?”
You couldn’t stop smiling. You
looked around for Rin and saw him stood off to the side. He waved at you,
smiling, and you could read every thought in that smile.
Go. Enjoy your moment. Teach them, join them, let them congratulate
you. We’ll celebrate later.
The smile grew into a smirk as he
saw that you knew what you meant, and as you looked at the people holding your
hand and pulling you to the change room, and the boyfriend waiting for you, you
couldn’t be happier.
