“Brianne, wait!”
Kakashi raced through the village, following his fellow shinobi. Their
feet followed a familiar path, but this wasn’t like any other time. He had
almost lost her a few times, and would have if it wasn’t for the red droplets
marking her path. The villages craned their necks to get a good look at the
situation, no doubt it would be the source of their nightly gossip about the
shinobi. He caught up to her, just as she fumbled with the keys to their
apartment, they jingled faintly in her shaking fingers and then slipped through
to the ground.
Kakashi picked them up smoothly, and unlocked the door. She ran in,
escaping the staring eyes from the street.
“Brianne, what-” Kakashis words cut off as Brianne’s body wriggled and
struggled to take off the shirt that was clung to her skin.
“Get it off! Get it off!!” She flung it to the floor, and then her
fingers flew to her pants, undoing the buttons and throwing them to join the
shirt. Then she just stood there, and Kakashi’s chest clutched at the sight of
her.
Tears fell from her eyes, streaks through the bloodstained cheeks. Her
clothes were soaked in it, the blood, and she was covered in it as well.
Kakashi knew well that it wasn’t her blood, it was her teammates, but that didn’t
seem to calm Brianne.
“Shhh, Brianne you’re ok.”
“I know.” She whispered, eyes glued to the floor as more tears brimmed
at her eyes.
But Kakashi wasn’t about to let her suffer alone. He wrenched off the
clothes above his waist and in seconds he had crossed the room, stepping over
her pile of clothes, and had her in his arms, pulling her body against his. She
clutched at him, relying on him. He was her rock, he was here for her. He would
warm her cold body and bring her life back to her.
But she was just so scared, her teammates had lost so much blood, she couldn’t
stand it, the warm stickiness of it soaking into her clothes and her pores.
They couldn’t possibly survive this, the mission had gone so badly, they’d
barely made it back at all. She wriggled her body, trying to escape him. It was
too tight, she was trapped, she needed to breathe-
His cheek rested on her head, his hand brushing warmth into her hair. He
felt her struggle in his arms but he only held on tighter, crushing her to his
chest as he waited for her to calm down.
“They’re being looked after.” He said, but it was a while before she
responded.
“No one survives after that.”
“We’ll go and check on them in the morning, there’s nothing else we can
do now.”
Her body spasmed as another sob wracked through her.
“What if they die?” Her voice was so small, as she asked the question
all shinobi avoid. Their lives were on the line every day, they could die at
any moment, so when they were off missions they pretended the world was fine.
Nothing could get them there. They couldn’t possibly die here.
“Then we let them go.” He whispered back. He tilted his head to look at
her, a thumb brushing her cheek and smudging the blood that was drying there. “Ok?”
She stood on tiptoes, her lips meeting his, as if she needed to prove
that she was still there and alive and okay. Her lips slid over his, her tongue
glossing against his lower lip. His lips parted, but it was his tongue that
slipped inside her mouth, responding to her, calling to her. He leaned down,
pressing harder against her lips. Her heart thudded inside her, shivers ran
down her spine. Nothing made her feel as- alive, as kissing Kakashi. Something
about the hazy smoke that filled her mind as his lips raced against hers, about
the warm hand that angled her neck to kiss her better.
He lightly sucked on her lower lip, before breaking the kiss and looking
at her again. “You ok?”
She nodded slightly, she wasn’t ok, but she was better. Kakashi nodded
before taking her hand and leading her to the bathroom to wash off the blood
and she smiled. People wouldn’t think of Kakashi as the kind of man to nurse
someone back to health, or help them with a bath, make them breakfast. But he
was all of that to her, and he always would be.
